Derby City Council successfully bid for funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund to refurbish Derby's Arboretum and Rose Hill Recreation Ground. Over five million pounds is being invested into the park to restore buildings and provide new facilities including play areas for toddlers and older children. The improvement project has been developed after consulting with local residents and organisations. The refurbishments should be completed by 2005.

| Along with security cameras and new
lighting, there will be a new building bordering the 1845 Rose Hill
Recreation Ground extension and the refurbished Grade II* Listed Arboretum.
A new building, the Heart of the Park Building, will house public conveniences, changing rooms, a cafeteria,
displays and an office for the local Police "Beat Officer".
Rose Hill Lodge will be used for community Arts and as a Community Centre, Grove Street Lodge will be restored and used as a Resource Centre with displays and historical data covering the history of the Arboretum. The William Duesbury entrance on Arboretum Square will be restored as an Orangery (the Arcade) with an entrance to the park via the two front doors. Other items such as the Florentine Boar and possibly other statues, are to be replaced as part of the overall refurbishment. Many people feel that a bandstand should also be reinstated, however this is unlikely at this stage as it has not been approved by English Heritage. A number of trees will be replaced by a selection of examples of some of the original species of trees planted by J. C. Loudon, the paths will be re-laid, the Grove Street entrance gates reconstructed and the whole eleven acre site of the 1840 park will be enclosed by a wall or railings.
