This map shows that the Arboretum was surrounded by farmland in 1852, the Royal Crown Derby works was occupied by the Union Workhouse and though Arboretum Street had been built, the square had not yet been developed.

Note the pond at the location of Strutt Street, several wells are to be found in the surrounding gardens, offering evidence of an underground water source, possibly a stream.

Charles Brown was the Arboretum's first Curator, he lived in Joseph Strutt's cottage with his wife and children, as a tenant for a rent of two shillings per week paid to the Arboretum Committee. this arrangement that  to continue for as long as he remained in Joseph Strutt's service. The cottage was also known as "The Cottage in the Rose Garden", it may have been the same cottage that was demolished during the early 1970s.
