The Aviary

The main aviary was established in 1890 near to the present site of the Strutt Bowling Green (top photo) entering from Moreleston  Street, and a second was built near to the Grove Street lodge, apparently where the monkeys were kept,  but was removed sometime between the 1960s to the early 1970s, due to vandalism.

Two aviaries are shown on a 1936 Ordnance Survey Map, the first being immediately left of the Grove Street Lodge buildings.

The second Aviary as in  the above photo, shows the view facing north west from the Moreleston Street side of the Arboretum, alongside the Bowling Green.

Note the circular (apparently thatched) roofs over two of the cages, this is probably the aviary referred to as the "Big Aviary" in a Derby Evening Telegraph article,  "Love Birds in the aviary", dated February 22nd 1933.

Aviary (around 1940s-50)

This is the aviary (above) remembered by most people who have lived in the area during the last 60 years. This is all that remained of the large aviary up to the 1970s, the houses in the background are possibly on Moreleston Street, more detail of the glasshouse structure is visible in the photo below (c 1900).

Glass house structure not shown in other photos of the aviary
A postcard photo showing a glass structure, part of the glasshouse structure is visible in the photo above, but is not visible in most photos of the aviary, c1900. This view was probably taken from the Morleston Street side of the aviary.

Nottingham Arboretum's Aviary

This photo was taken on September 9th 2003! However this is Nottingham Arboretum's Aviary, where much of the layout was copied from Derby Arboretum. This Aviary, similar to Derby's, is to be reconstructed, with Heritage Lottery money, to its original Victorian style.

There are no plans to replace Derby Arboretum's Aviary.
